Comment On Before Until

Melchior is either a fan of opera, 16 liter bottles, or Chrono Trigger, or maybe he just has a weird name. Anyhow, he encountered an error on a large shipping company's web site. Melchior says the company's name rhymes with "Percolator," and no, I can't think of the name of the company either. [expand full text]

I suspect rhymes with Percolator means Purolator Courier, a North American courier run by Canada Post.

hehe, nice error, After must be before Until

Seems some dummy values were left in or javascript checked wrong things (not element.value but element.name)
(first :P)

Makes perfect sense if you ask me.

"Any time after must be at least 1 hour before until."

They are trying to say that every specific point in time comes after another one, but 1 hour before the one that comes up 1 hour later.

P.S. Chrono Trigger was a great RPG.

I prefer riddles instead of information I can use in my error messages. "File Not Found" should be "It's an object, yet not one here."

The On/before/until message is a pretense to the time machine that "Percolator" intends to build. No wonder you are all confused.

It actually makes sense to me, they're capitalized indicating they refer to field names. For example:

Deliver Any Time After: 4pm
Until: 5pm

Arguably "And Before" would be a better name than Until, but it still makes sense in context.

In which case, the correct, non-WTF, message would be something like "The time in the 'Any Time After' box must be at least 1 hour before the time in the 'Until' box."

(OK, maybe I'm a little too verbose, but at least it doesn't look like gibberish!)

It certainly makes sense now, but it couldn't hurt to use a more readable sentence, like "you must allow at least one hour for delivery." That way, they could change the interface text (e.g., "Delivery between __ and __") without needing to change the error message.

That's why I'd quote the field names in order to make that obvious (to most folks, anyways).

Actually this is perfectly understandable if you are familiar with the courier industry.

"Any Time After" and "Until" refer to restrictions on when a package may be delivered. What this dialog says is that a 1 hour window is the smallest window for delivery permissible.

For instance, you may request that a package may be delivered "Any Time After" 3:00PM "Until" 4:00PM.

Simple.

Yes, and in the original (Japanese) release of Chrono Trigger, they didn't use those names for the three Gurus -- they had three one-syllable names, along the lines of "Bu, Gu, and Mu". (Which is where the "Nu" name probably came from.)

Nice. As a developer, I get to write a lot of error messages. I totally understand where that sentence comes from. Imagine this form:

Time After: 2:00 PM
Until: 8:00 PM

So any "Time After" must be at least 1 hour before "Until". Logically, it makes sense. Rationally, it does not. This is where a good developer would take an extra few minutes to think up:

"The time in the 'Until' field must be at least 1 hour later than the time in the 'Time After' field."

Or just rename the fields to something non-ambiguous.

There are untold masses with English and Communications degrees yearning to hold jobs. Why can't these companies hire them to write the UI text?

I believe that this warning dialog applies to a search form. The matching times start "After" the first field, and continue "Until" the second field. This is an open time interval, such as (6, 10], in hours.

I would write the dialog this way:

The "After" field must have a time value at least one hour before the "Until" field.

Of course, I would choose better names for the seach form fields!

um... I think I might have been involved in writing some of this software.

Basically they're talking about pickup times. So basically the carrier can come pick up the package "Any Time After" 2:00pm "Until" 5:30pm. It's a hard question. When doing JavaScript validation how do you point people back to errors on the page? I think this code would just pull what was inside the label for the input box and display it in the validation. I guess a custom error message would have been better, but it's still kind of hard to express.

Perhaps, "Your pickup window expires before it begins"?
